Ancient Bibliothéque Communal

The Communal Bibliothéque of Tubuai was eventually closed and I was quick to ask the Mairie if I could use this room to create a small Museum, and after some months they agreed. This was a spacious second story room that was completely empty. I quickly decided to order a good many large 2x12x 20ft planks of good quality New Zealand pine that was in a semi finished state, this meant hand sanding them all but was cheaper in the long run. I needed a lot of sand paper and gallons of varathane polyurethane to make them resistant. My plan was to make bookshelves and desks with these planks and slotted angle iron. I bought tools to cut the angle iron, nuts and bolts and spent the next few months putting it all together in my time off.

October of 2009.

by October of 2009 the shelves and books were in place, however we never expected that within a few months Tubuai would be davastated by a category 4 cyclone that passed directly over the Island. Even being in the second story of a strong cement building, was not a gaurantee of survival, but far better than a house next to the beach.
